Diatomite

Diatomite is a lightweight, highly porous natural raw material with exceptional filtration and absorption properties.

Applications of diatomite

Thanks to its unique structure, diatomite is widely used across a whole range of industries. It serves primarily as a filter material in beverage production, especially for beer, wine and fruit juices. Its high absorption capacity also makes it well suited to the production of sorbents, cat litter, drying agents and materials for agricultural and technical applications.

The combination of low bulk density, high porosity and excellent filtration properties makes diatomite a raw material suitable for a broad spectrum of specialised industrial applications.

Diatomite products

The passage of the filtered substance through a layer of diatomite is one of the most widespread methods of filtration in the food industry. Thanks to a unique diatomite deposit formed in the Tertiary period in the České Budějovice Basin from the siliceous shells of dead freshwater diatoms, our company has been a major supplier of filter diatomite since 1977.

Extraction sites:

  • Borovany

Applications:
Filter diatomite is used most widely in the filtration of beverages such as beer, wine and fruit juices; it is also used to purify dairy products, oils, starches and fats. Owing to the fineness of the material, diatomite acts as a filler in the production of paints, varnishes and epoxy resins, as an abrasive in the manufacture of polishing and cleaning agents, and in pharmaceuticals and agriculture as a carrier of chemical substances.

The broad range of applications for diatomite is made possible by the exceptional properties of this raw material, above all its low bulk density, large sorption surface, fineness and health safety.

The filter diatomite produced at the Borovany plant is suitable for all types of precoat filters used worldwide. We offer a complete range of very high quality diatomites, from the coarse grades F 100, F 70, F 60 and F 50, which have the highest filtration rate and are used mainly for the base precoat, through the medium-coarse F 25, to the very fine grades F 15 and F 10, suitable for body feed, which when correctly used ensure a high clarity of the filtrate. F 4 diatomite is used mainly in the production of filter sheets.

Dispatch options:
All grades are packed in paper bags, placed on EUR pallets and wrapped in stretch film. Filter diatomite can also be filled into bulk bags and placed on 100 x 100 cm pallets. By arrangement, filter diatomite can be supplied in private packaging according to the customer’s wishes.

  • BORCAT Extra clumping lightweight mineral litter uniquely absorbs both liquids and odours and does not stick to animal fur.

BORCAT Extra litter is a 100% natural and entirely health-safe product manufactured using a unique technology. Thanks to the exceptional properties of the input raw materials, BORCAT Extra litter stands out for its unique absorption capacity, which can absorb not only liquids but also unwanted accompanying odours. Compared with common clumping litters, our product is approximately 20 % lighter, which owners appreciate when handling the bags. At the same time, less granulate is needed to bind the liquid, so BORCAT Extra litter contributes significantly to an economical solution for keeping pets at home. Among the valued advantages of BORCAT Extra litter is its attractive light colour, which enhances the sense of cleanliness and hygiene of the animal toilet. BORCAT Extra litter is intended for all pets (cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, tortoises, birds, etc.).

Properties:

  • the litter clumps and is easy to clean up
  • 20 % lighter than common litters
  • absorbs odours and liquids
  • does not stick to animal fur
  • attractive light colour

Technical parameters:

  • bulk density: 700 – 830 kg/m3
  • grain size: 0.7 – 4 mm
  • moisture: max. 10 %

BORCAT Extra 10 litres 100 pcs/pallet approx. 790 kg/pallet

Product disposal:
Dispose of used litter or unused product residues as inert municipal solid waste, or add them to garden compost, where they act as a natural fertiliser and at the same time loosen the soil.

DIABOR diatomite provides comfort and ensures proper hygiene in the keeping of poultry, cattle and other farm animals.

DIABOR is a natural mixture of diatomite and clay minerals based on silica and phyllosilicates, intended for application in the environment of farm animals. In poultry farming it is advisable to apply DIABOR not only as part of the bedding, but also as a filling for the dust bath. It helps maintain a high standard of hygiene in the sense of a dry floor or dry bedding. Owing to the natural properties of the input raw material, DIABOR helps prevent the occurrence of the poultry red mite in poultry farming.

Properties:

  • a natural mixture of diatomite and clay minerals
  • veterinary technical product – registration number VTP/012/24-C
  • simple application directly into the bedding or as a filling for the dust bath
  • keeps the bedding and stalls of farm animals dry
  • simple dosing by spreading or dusting

Technical parameters:

  • amorphous SiO2: 50 – 60 %
  • phyllosilicates: 35 – 45 %
  • bulk density: 300 – 400 kg/m3
  • particle size d50: 7 – 12 µm
  • moisture: max. 6 %
  • colour: beige

Instructions for use:
The diatomite is applied dry, by spreading or dusting, either onto a clean stall/henhouse surface or onto clean bedding in farm animal facilities.

  • recommended amount: 20 g/m2 (poultry farming), 100 g/m2 (cattle stalls)
  • storage: store in a dry place, keep out of sight and reach of children, for animals only
  • warning: because of dust generated when handling the product, the use of protective equipment (goggles, respirator) is recommended

Diatomite granulate is a dried, highly porous natural material with a wide range of applications, in particular as sorbents and carriers of various substances.

The main area of use is industrial operations and emergency situations, in which diatomite granulate serves to effectively deal with liquid spills (petroleum substances, aqueous solutions and emulsions). The material is suitable for all types of solid surfaces both indoors and outdoors. Being health-safe, the material ensures safe handling even in regular use. Its non-flammable design increases occupational safety in hazardous environments. Diatomite granulate is widely used in agriculture thanks to its high porosity, absorption capacity, chemical inertness and high silica content (SiO). It is used as a carrier material, while also improving soil properties and serving as a source of available silicon.

Properties:

Diatomite is an unconsolidated rock formed in a Tertiary freshwater sea by the deposition of the microscopic siliceous shells of single-celled algae (diatoms) as well as the siliceous spicules of sponges, these porous shells containing organic and inorganic admixtures to varying degrees. The basic building material of diatomite is SiO2 in an amorphous structure (SiO2·nH2O). Diatomite is a very light, porous raw material with excellent absorption properties.

Instructions for use:

  • Pour the material onto the surface of the liquid and let it take effect. The liquid is rapidly drawn into the individual granulate particles until the sorption capacity is fully saturated.
  • Sorption can be accelerated by raking the granulate with a suitable tool (shovel, rake, broom, etc.).
  • Once the sorption capacity is saturated, remove the used granulate with a suitable tool and place it in a prepared container for hazardous substances.
  • Dispose of the used material in accordance with the applicable legislation and directives.

Dispatch options:

The products are packed in paper carry bags with a capacity of 5 and 10 litres, sealed using modern hot-melt technology and placed on EUR pallets. Diatomite granulate can be filled into bulk bags and placed on 100 x 100 cm pallets. By arrangement, diatomite granulate can be supplied in private packaging according to the customer’s wishes.
