Feldspars

Feldspars are among the most widespread rock-forming minerals and represent an important raw material for a wide range of industries. Thanks to their chemical composition and physical properties, they are used above all in the ceramic and glass industries, but also in the production of coatings, plastics, rubber and adhesives.

Applications of feldspars

Feldspars are an important fluxing component in the production of porcelain, sanitaryware, ceramic wall and floor tiles, glazes, enamels and flat and container glass. They are also used as functional, chemically inert fillers with excellent dispersibility, stable pH, high abrasion resistance, low viscosity even at a high filler content, a suitable refractive index and high chemical resistance.

In the ceramic industry they help increase the strength, toughness and durability of the ceramic body. At the same time they support the closing of pores, thereby reducing its water absorption. In the glass industry, thanks to their alumina content (AlO), they increase the hardness, durability and chemical resistance of the glass.

Types of feldspar

Thanks to their composition, potassium feldspars are suitable above all for the production of container and sheet glass, glazes and porcelain. The required properties of the final products are achieved by suitable blending of the feldspar raw materials, their crushing, dry grinding, multi-stage classification and magnetic separation.

Feldspars are used mainly in the production of tiles, sintered tiles, sanitaryware, porcelain, electrical porcelain, glazes, enamels and frits. They are also used in the production of container, tableware and flat glass.

Dispatch options:
All feldspars can be supplied loose on trucks, in silo trucks or by rail. Dispatch in bulk bags or paper bags is also possible.

Sodium-potassium feldspars are used as fluxes throughout the ceramic industry. The required properties of the final products are achieved by suitable blending of the feldspar raw materials, their crushing, dry grinding and multi-stage classification of the ground material.

The required properties of the final products are achieved by suitable blending of the feldspar raw materials, their crushing, dry grinding and multi-stage classification of the ground material.

The ground feldspar blend for sanitaryware contains components added to the ceramic body during the production of sanitaryware (e.g. washbasins, toilets, bidets) which increase its hardness and its resistance to wear, scratching and chemical influences. It also serves as the flux of the diturvit blend, which allows the products to sinter at firing temperatures of 1200-1250°C.

The ground feldspar blend is supplied as a finely ground mixture of feldspar, quartz sand and recycled cullet from sanitaryware production. The formulation is always developed according to the customer’s requirements for particle size distribution, sodium and potassium contents, the sodium to calcium ratio and the content of the individual types of feldspar. The requirement for quartz content is important as well. Cullet can be incorporated in the quantity required by the customer.

Our company supplies sodium-potassium, potassium and sodium-calcium feldspars for the production of blends with the required sintering activity.

Applications:

Sanitaryware is traditionally produced from a combination of clay, kaolin, feldspar and quartz, which are fired at high temperatures. Other “hard” materials may be added to improve its properties. These components are added to the ceramic mixture before firing in order to create the final, highly resistant and durable sanitary product. The aim is for the surface to be as smooth and as little prone to damage as possible, which makes maintenance easier and extends the service life of the product.

The ground chamotte blends from our production are part of the formulations of the sanitary materials FFC (Fine fireclay) and super FFC. They are blends of several chamottes, feldspar and quartz sands that make use of the differing thermal properties (expansion) of the individual components during heating. Some raw materials may be unfired, but firing no longer changes them significantly. The basis is fired clay (chamotte). It is advantageous to use several chamottes with different contents of mullite, quartz and cristobalite.

Applications:

The ground chamotte blend for sanitaryware makes use of the properties of chamotte as an additive to the ceramic mixture in the production of sanitary products (washbasins, toilets, etc.). The reason for adding these blends is that the original raw clay tends to shrink considerably during drying and firing, which can lead to cracks and deformation of the products. Chamotte is added to the ceramic mixture as a grog (sometimes also referred to as “fine chamotte” or “chamotte grog”). The ground chamotte blend improves the processing properties of the ceramic mixture and its dimensional stability during production and firing. The final properties of the blend are important: chemical and mineralogical composition, behaviour during heating and cooling, and the particle size distribution after the blend has been ground.
