Kaolin

Kaolin is a fine clay with a high content of the mineral kaolinite. Thanks to its specific composition, high purity and unique technological properties, it is an important industrial raw material with wide use across a whole range of applications. Its properties are influenced both by the character of the deposit and by the method of subsequent production processing.

Applications of kaolins

In the ceramic industry, kaolin is an important component of formulations for the production of ceramic wall and floor tiles, sanitaryware, porcelain, refractory materials and tableware ceramics. It is also used in the production of glazes. In the paper industry it is used as a filler and coating raw material for paper and board, where it significantly influences their final properties, especially brightness, opacity, smoothness and printability.

Kaolin is also widely used in the production of coatings, paints, plastics, rubber and adhesives. It helps improve the appearance, colour, viscosity and other functional properties of the final products. Another important area of use is the production of glass fibres, where kaolin serves primarily as a source of alumina (AlO).

Types of kaolin

Ceramic kaolins are produced in various particle sizes. The individual grades are further distinguished by their rheological parameters as well as by differing chemical composition. Kaolins from the Horní Bříza and Kaznějov sites are characterised by excellent casting behaviour and body formation. Kaolins from Chlumčany stand out for their green strength.

Extraction sites:

  • Horní Bříza
  • Kaznějov
  • Chlumčany

Applications:
Ceramic kaolins are intended above all for manufacturers of wall tiles, floor tiles and sanitaryware.

Dispatch options:
We supply ceramic kaolins as a granulate in the form of dried noodles, mostly loose in trucks or wagons. Packing in paper bags, PE bags or bulk bags is also possible.

These are blended kaolins with optimally adjusted rheological parameters, body formation and green strength. Thanks to these properties, they are predestined for the slip-casting technology used in sanitaryware production.

Extraction sites:

  • Horní Bříza
  • Kaznějov

Applications:
Sanitaryware kaolins are used above all in the production of sanitaryware.

Dispatch options:
We supply blended sanitaryware kaolins as granulate in the form of dried extrudates, mostly in bulk in trucks or wagons. Packaging in paper bags, PE bags or big bags is also possible.

Paper kaolins are used above all as a filler in the production of SC papers, packaging papers and board. Some grades can be applied as a coating for the paper substrate. They influence the properties of the finished product, such as the brightness, opacity, smoothness, gloss, porosity or strength of the paper.

Extraction sites:

  • Kaznějov

Applications:
Paper kaolins are intended for the production of paper and board.

Dispatch options:
We supply paper kaolins as granulate in the form of dried extrudates, mostly in bulk in trucks or wagons. Packaging in big bags or in water-soluble paper bags is also possible. Some kaolins are also dispatched as a 62% slurry (in tankers).

In the production of paints and varnishes, filling kaolins influence their density and viscosity, shade, colour saturation and hiding power. In the production of plastics, filling kaolin modifies the forming and dielectric properties, colour and UV resistance, and acts as a flame retardant. In adhesives and sealants it reduces flammability and affects the curing rate, strength and elasticity. In rubber products, filling kaolin contributes to better elasticity and thermal conductivity, and also influences the vulcanisation rate.

Extraction sites:

  • Horní Bříza
  • Kaznějov

Applications:
Filling kaolins are used mainly in the production of paints, varnishes, plastics, adhesives, sealants and rubber.

Dispatch options:
We supply filling kaolins loose in silo trucks or silo wagons, or packed in paper bags or bulk bags.

Fiberglass kaolins are used as a reacting component in the production of glass fibres. Here kaolin is the carrier of Al₂O₃, and in the finished product it influences its colour and elasticity.

Extraction sites:

  • Kaznějov
  • Horní Bříza

Applications:
These kaolins are specially prepared for the production of glass fibres.

Dispatch options:
We supply fiberglass kaolin loose in silo trucks or silo wagons, or packed in bulk bags.

Raw kaolins are used above all in ceramic production.

Extraction sites:

  • Kaznějov
  • Horní Bříza
  • Chlumčany

Applications:
Raw kaolins are used in the production of wall tiles, refractory products and white Portland cement.

Dispatch options:
We supply raw kaolins in bulk in trucks or wagons.
