Metakaolin

Metakaolin is a highly reactive form of kaolin clay that results from the calcination of kaolin at elevated temperatures. This process transforms the crystalline structure of kaolin into an amorphous form, enhancing its pozzolanic properties.

Applications of metakaolin

Metakaolin is prized for its ability to improve the performance of concrete by enhancing strength, durability, and workability while reducing permeability and efflorescence. Its pozzolanic activity makes it a valuable supplementary cementitious material, particularly in high-performance concrete mixes and in applications where the production of low-carbon concrete is desired.

Beyond the construction industry, metakaolin finds versatile applications. In the realm of ceramics, it enhances glaze formulations, improving surface finish and color vibrancy. Metakaolin’s pozzolanic properties extend to the production of high-performance coatings, providing corrosion resistance in marine and industrial settings. Moreover, it serves as a catalyst support in chemical processes, boosting reaction rates and selectivity.

In the realm of environmental remediation, metakaolin aids in wastewater treatment, adsorbing pollutants and heavy metals. Its versatility also extends to the cosmetics industry, where it’s used as a functional filler in skincare and personal care products.
